CJ408 Wk6 Discussion Post Identify three different types of agencies where records would be important in the criminal justice system. According to our chapter reading, “information collected by or for public agencies usually falls into one of the three general categories: Published statistics Nonpublic agency records routinely collected for internal use, and New data collected by agency staff for specific research purposes”. (Maxfield & Babbie, P220) The first category of public statistics is typically a collection of routinely published compilations of data. Sample surveys and topics frequently studied by the government such as correctional populations that examine prison populations over time or to compare rates of growth from state to state. Nonpublic agency records are typically compiled data such as the FBI’s publishing the summary of UCR “but each of the nation’s several thousand law enforcement agencies produces an incredible volume of data not routinely released for public distribution”. Unformatted text preview: the criminal justice system and the individual entities within it create data reports to keep records of occurrences and statistics so that they might make necessary adjustments in the future but this information is not for the public, it is for the inter agencies. The last agency of importance for this particular discussion is that of new data collected by agency staff. With this agency, “it is sometimes possible to use a hybrid source of data in which criminal justice agency staff collect information for specific research purposes.” (P224) In other words, data is collected and noted based on daily interactions with criminals and other individuals involved in the criminal justice system via the route of interviews or daily interactions.
