(CJ408) Week6- Assignment: Secondary Data Stephanie von Normann Professor James Rynard 4 November 2012 Secondary data is described as data and records produced from formal data collection and investigations that can be accessed through sources such as the internet or other public information source outlets. Advantages of secondary data analysis is that cost is exponentially less for one; the amount of secondary data available on the internet is astronomical and it is so beneficial that many criminal justice researchers spend their entire careers in and studying secondary data analysis. Disadvantages of secondary data would be, “the recurrent question of validity”. (Maxfiled & Babbie, P236) For example, if one researcher studies a criminal justice question;

obtaining their secondary data can result in inaccurate or incomplete data analysis. Secondly, disadvantages would be whether “secondary data provides valid measures of the variables you want to analyze”. (Maxfiled & Babbie, P236)
