August 31, 2012 Bullshit Ramblings In the Structuralist theoretician Claude Lévi-Strauss’ anthropological study, Structural Anthropology , Lévi-Strauss applied linguistics to stories and the way we tell stories. Lévi-Strauss’ claims about mythology were heavily influenced by the linguistic terms “la parole” and “la langue.” Lévi-Strauss explained “la parole” and “la langue” in terms of mythology. According to Lévi-Strauss, “la parole” is the individual utterance, the individual myth, which exists on the horizontal axis, is chronologically organized and thus cannot be moved out of it’s preordained slot in history. “La parole” is the individual iteration of a story, for example, one of the Gospels. “La langue,” on the other hand, is the underlying system that connects every myth, and is organized vertically and thematically. “La langue” is the collective meaning derived from each individual “parole,” for example, the total “definition” of the Myth of Christos.
