Melanie Walling Professor Josipovic Theories of Personality 12 February 2014 Frued’s Psychoanalytical Theory Freud has many significant contributions to the field of psychology. So much so that his concepts and theories are talked about in everything I have learned so far. For instance, one of his most important, in my eyes, is his idea of the conscious, preconscious and unconscious. He identifies the conscious as what we are aware of. He identifies the preconscious as thoughts in our unconscious but can be retrieved and seen as conscious with little to no effort. Finally, he identifies the unconscious as the thoughts that are occurring in our minds without being aware of them. Freud is also important for his views on instincts. He states that there are life instincts, death instincts, and then the individual versus the society. In life instincts, we survive. In other words, we do what is necessary for our survival as humans and for our species. He uses the terms eros and libido as factors in our life instincts. He states that human beings try to use life instincts as long as possible before reaching death. But he says that humans are aggressive, that they use each other and exploit one another for competition.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
