Psychology Notes Chapter 1- The Science of Psychology Psychology: the scientific study of behavior and mental processes o Why scientific? To study behavior and mental processes in both animals and humans. Psychologists don’t want to let biases cause them to make faulty observations. They use the scientific method to be precise. The goal is specifically aimed at uncovering human and animal behavior are: description, explanation, prediction, and control Theory- general explanation of a set of observations or facts Psychology is a relatively new field in the realm of sciences, only about 130 years old. Dualism- the belief that the soul could exist separately from the body In 1879 Willhiem Wundt attempted to apply scientific principles to the study of the human mind o We call him the father of Psychology Objective introspection- the process of examining and measuring ones own thoughts and mental activities
