Hong Lai Henry Chan Sociology 1 Prof. John Fox Journal 6 “The Social Construction of Gender” by Margaret L. Andersen, as it said by the topic name, is about how gender differences have decided many choices in one’s life. Just simply because of gender, the opportunities available can account for a big different. Our society has constructed a formal image on how male and female should look like. “Indeed, with the modern technologies now used during pregnancy, the social construction of gender can begin even before one is born”, in such circumstance, it really bother me to think about whether technological advancement is positive thing. At the beginning part of the article, the author tells us evidence that even toys have already under social construction on gender. They are shaped in the favor of different gender. We are constructed to fulfill expectation that the society wish to match with such gender. To clarify the entire unknown, there is definition showing that gender is just social concept, in which either woman or man is placed in a designated idea. At the first glance of this actually reminds me about the video clip “race”, which also mentioned that race is just a social terms to classify based on our physical appearance, instead of any biological differential fact.
