Sociology 1 Introduction to Sociology Sociological Imagination Assignment (Rewritten) Hong Lai Henry Chan 24 th March 2013 My name is Hong Lai Henry Chan, and I am an international student from Hong Kong. I grew up in a middle-class family, which my father is a manager of a house estate company in Hong Kong and my mother as an office clerk working in a company, which produces locks and keys. Being the smallest in the family doesn’t mean that I am treated with any privilege; instead they have a same expectation on me that I can graduate in a good university and finish my academic process in Hong Kong, like what my sister does. And things go on as planned, I get into a high school name Diocesan Boys’ School, which is relatively one of the famous school in Hong Kong. My parents are so happy that I make it into this school, which have a higher chance to get into university since the academic level is usually higher than other schools do. Unfortunately, due to the limitation of university spaces, and my result in public examination doesn’t meet the qualification to get one for myself. But my parents will never give up, and here comes one of my biggest events in my life, to study overseas. This is also the reason why I am standing here now in United States of America, a place where chance is always waiting for people who work hard. My goal is clear, to get a higher GPA grade as possible and access into University of California, in order to fulfill my parents’ expectation. This has been my first ever time to write an assignment to show the relationship between my own biography and history, and the first thing that comes to my mind was Hong Kong being given to Britain before 1997, which I thought it accounted for a massive change to my home place. The reason behind this was simple, China lost to Britain in Opium War. Poppy was a raw material that could

produce opium, but in China it had been known as a medical purpose. This caught Britain attention, so merchants from Britain started to import Opium to China. Eventually, more and more China people got addicted to it, so the government realized that and destroyed a large number of Opium, which declared into a war. Roughly speaking, it was actually a war between not only China and Britain, but also some other western country like France and Russia. After the lost of war, China signed the Treaty of Nanking between Britain in 1842 that agree to cede part of Hong Kong. And later on Hong Kong was leased to Britain as a whole to increase the security of the land since Hong Kong was an island isolated by the land of China. So how did this war bring changes to the society? Under the control of Britain, from the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
