Persuasive Speech Outline Question Type: Policy Organization: Classical Argument General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade audience that arranged marriage is not as negative as typically thought. Central Idea: Arranged marriage is typically portrayed in a negative light, when in reality, it should be a considerable alternative. I. Introduction A. Hypothetical example of arranged marriage B. Arranged marriage should be a considerable alternative to marriages of choice C. Interest and research of arranged marriages D. We will be reviewing the following four items: 1. The western perception 2. What makes it work 3. The role of love in marriage 4. Why it will prevail marriages of choice II. The western perception A. Arranged marriages typically viewed negatively 1. According to Robert Epstein, author of How Love Emerges in Arranged Marriages, Americans are very demanding when it comes to love. 2. Individualistic society, values have evolved 3. Emphasis on marrying for love and romance 4. According to Brian J. Willoughby, assistant professor in the School of Family Life at BYU, arranged marriages can work “because they remove so much of the anxiety about ‘is this the right person?’” B. Absence of difference in satisfaction 1. According to the results of the study “Marriage Satisfaction and Wellness in India and the United States,” there was no support for difference in marital satisfaction between arranged marriages in India and marriages of choice in the United States.
