Auteur Theory The auteur theory is the theory that the director is responsible for the outcome of a film, and has actually become the “author”, by putting his/her personal touches into the film, thus making it their own (Goodykoontz, 2011). In order for a director to be considered an auteur, they must possess technical competence, distinguishable personality, and interior meaning (Goodykoontz, 2011). In other words, the director’s films must be well made, have a certain “style” associated with the director, and must send a certain message, delivering it to the audience throughout the film. “The auteur theory of criticism gives them creative credit for their films and at the same time turns them into stars (Goodykoontz, 2011)”. Because so many of the public associate the auteur theory (whether they know it or not), it has become highly effective in sales of movie tickets and sales. The idea that many people will see a movie simply because of the director and the auteur theory associated with them has made this theory very important in the film industry. Often
