Homework Questions Chapter 1 and 2 7. How do local area networks (LANs) differ from metropolitan area networks (MANs), wide area networks (WANs), and backbone networks (BNs)? LAN or Local Area Network is a group of computers or terminals that can be found in the same area and are usually joined by a common cable so they can transfer information back and forth. BN or backbone network is a high speed centralized network that joins other networks in an area covering up to quite a few miles. MAN or metropolitan area network is a network that covers a geographical area that usually covers a city or area and typically uses common carrier cables, wires, etc. WAN or wide area network is a network that normally uses common carrier cables and covers a large geographical area. 14. Explain how a message is transmitted from one computer to another using layers.
