2 Paradigms, theory and research - paradigm : fundamental model / frame of reference we use to organize observations and reasoning; certain point of view. Bene ts : a) better understanding of bizarre views / action of others who are operating from another paradigm b) pro t from stepping outside our paradigm -> di ff erent ways of seeing and explaining things. 2.1 Some social science paradigms - Thomas Kuhn: believes that the succession of paradigms represents progress from false views to true ones - social science paradigms : variety of views, each o ff ering insights the others lack while ignoring aspects of social life that the other reveal - macro -theory: large, aggregate entities of society / even the whole society - micro -theory: issues of social life at the level of individuals and small groups - early positivism (August Comte): society could be studied and understood logically and rationally; sociology could be as scienti c as biology or physics - 1 -
