1 The basics of social research - we know little based on personal experience; most of what we know is a matter of agreement and belief - epistemology : science of knowing - methodology : science of ' nding out' - probabilistic in nature: e ff ects occur more often when the causes occur than when the causes are absent - human inquiry : aims at answering “what” and “why” questions - secondhand knowledge : a) tradition: the things that everybody knows, broadly accepted b) authority: bene t from new discoveries & understandings by others. 1.1 Errors in inquiry (and some solutions) - inaccurate observations. - overgeneralization : often assumed that few similar events are evidence of a overall pattern. Solutions : a) large sample of observations b) replication: repeating a study and checking to see if the same results occur each time. - selective observations: focus on events that t in your pattern. Solution : try hard to nd nding deviant solutions who do not t the general pattern.
