HIST 111 This is Spaarta! The last stand at Thermopylae makes many wonder why did the elite force of the Spartans stay and fight to the very end instead of retreating. To understand the reason why the Spartans fought the Persians to the very end despite being enormously outnumbered, one must understand the culture and way of life of the people of Sparta. Sparta was not always the strong military presence they ended up becoming, a revolt of their enslaved population gave them quite a scare of being overthrown and this event will become the initiation to birth the most impressive military force of Greece (pg. 88). The city state of Sparta eventually became so powerful, they would leave the city virtually unfortified (pg. 88). Sparta's military became so well known many feared to attack them and Spartan military endeavors were for the most part offensive, there was not much need for defenses of their land. An overarching political view of the Greeks of that time was that politics were more of social collectivity of people not necessarily the area they were from (pg.78). To understand the idea of this new social collectivity, Spartans did not really identify with the land of Sparta, they as a people embodied Sparta, they themselves were Sparta.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
