Luis Rubiera Philosophy of Aquinas Professor Davies Final Paper Question 1 The meaning of substance, accident, form, actual, potential, and esse for Aquinas can be easily mapped out and explained for most people to understand. Furthermore, his reasoning, though one may disagree with it, is philosophically grounded and defendable. Because of these reasons I believe that his take on the notions of substance, accident, form, actual, potential, and esse are philosophically satisfactory. We begin with the explanation of what Aquinas means by substance and accidents. To Aquinas there is the first substance, which is a particular and attainable thing, and then the second substance, which is what material the thing is made of. Put simply substances are dogs, coal, a human being, etc. Accidents can be explained as the changes or modifications that a substance can undergo yet they are things that do not change the kind of thing that the substance is. Accidents are things that Aquinas believes are not intrinsic to the making of the substance as a member of its category of beings. Aquinas is clear that accidents only exist as accidents of a substance. The modifications that something may undergo can be changes in weight, size, color, and so on.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
