The web • Is a system with universally accepted standards for storing, retrieving, formatting, and displaying information using a client server architecture • Standards used include: – TCP/IP – the Web uses Internet after all – HTML: HyperText Markup Language – formats documents and incorporates dynamic links to other documents and pictures stored in the same or remote computers. – HTTP: HyperText Transfer Protocol – communication standard used to transfer pages on the web • Used by DNS • Identifies URL (Uniform Resource Locator) – E.g.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/baseball/mlb/11/16/bl ue- jays- melky- cabrera.ap/index.html – http names protocol used to display webpages, sportsillustrated.cnn.com is the domain name, /2012/baseball/mlb/11/16/ is the directory path that identifies where on the domain the web server page is stored, blue- jays- melky- cabrera.ap/index.html is the document name and the name of the format it is in.
