Organizational Behavior Past exams- Questions and Answers 1) Compare and Contrast three strengths and two weaknesses of the matrix versus the front/back structures. Ans. The strength of Matrix over Front and Back is that it allows employees to have a specialized approach of two different divisions instead of one, making room for innovation of products and services that meet the needs of the customers while front and back division does not allow marketing to have a say on what is to be sold to customers. The matrix organization also provides employees with two separate bosses creating greater communication linkages between the two groups Eg: Research and Development Head and Product Head. This allows for most discussion and debate over organizations progressions, making certain that the changes in vital products are approved by all major stakeholders before the product is implemented into the market. However, the linkages in the front and back structure are of a lower standing since the front end doesn't get to communicate with the back end making the flow of information through the organization very difficult. The weakness of using the matrix over the front and back structure is that it takes longer for decision making since more people's self interests have to be met before a decision can be made, while in the front and back structure this can be done more swiftly since very few people’s approvals are required to implement something. Therefore it takes a lot more time in a matrix organization to implement a new product when compared to the front and back structures. Another weakness of the matrix over the front and back structure is that is creates a conflict of interest between two divisons that have different operational goals. Eg: R&D might care more about researching a new product while the product heads would think about cutting costs. 2) The Organizational Chart provides a preliminary map of the political system. What are three fairly reliable inferences about the political system that you could make from an organization chart? What are two potentially misleading inferences that you might make? Ans. The three fairly reliable inferences about the political system of an organization can be made from it organizational chart are : 1) Through the hierarchical structure, we can see where the formal power lies and who has authority over the operations in an organization. Those higher up on the chart have more authoritative power. 2) We can observe that those in the same”box”, at the same level in th e organization chart, have the same or similar interests. They may hold collective interests because they work in the same sub unit. 3) We can also observe how there can be a conflict of interest with those with the same level of authoritative power, which could lead to delays in decision making process.
