Fisher-Edelglass 1 Zachary Fisher-Edelglass March 7, 2013 JRN101 Professor Bogardus Writing Assignment 2 City Council is reviewing an ordinance that would make arrested protestors pay for the cost of their arrest. Protesters would also have to pay a $300 processing fee. City council member William Belmonte proposed the ordinance. He has motioned for city attorney Allen Farci to review the legal aspects. City council members voted 5-2, approving Belmonte’s motion. This proposed ordinance comes after last week’s protest caused problems for law en- forcement. A group named SMOKERS (Stop Making Ordinances; Keep Every Right Safe) pro- tested the new law banning public smoking. City officials estimate it cost several thousands of dollars to arrest the protesters.Thirteen members of the group chained themselves to a bar inside the Steak and Ale Restaurant. The pro- testers then smoked cigarettes and cigars. There are people that feel these laws violate the rights of citizens.
