Sydney Schubert Dr. Helmer Theology 111-05 31 March 2013 Response Number Eleven In Gustavo Gutiérrez’s book, On Job: God-talk and the Suffering of the Innocent , he discusses the story of an honest man who feared God and shunned evil. “The question of “speaking ill” and “speaking well” of God is thus a central one in this book” (Gutiérrez 3). It is stated that the first scene takes place on earth, and the second takes place in the heavenly court, as the satan makes his first wager. In chapter one, many words and their translations are explained. Such as: “the word I translate as “man of integrity” is the Hebrew täm, a term with a rich and complex meaning on which it will be worth dwelling briefly. Täm means “innocent” but with the connotation of personal integrity, of something finished, complete, perfect, and therefore exemplary. Whence it also conveys the meaning ‘just’” (Gutiérrez 4).
