Materials Handling Defined as the efficient short distance movement that usually takes place within the confines of a building such as a plant and DC or between a building and a transportation service provider. The goal of materials handling is to achieve efficient movement of goods.

Materials Handling Dimensions Movement: The conveyance of goods into, within, and out of storage facilities. Time: Readying goods for production or for customer order filling. Quantity: Ensuring that the correct amount of product (or raw materials, packaging, or WIP) is moved to meet the needs of production and customers. Space: The effective use of limited warehousing and plant space.

Objectives Of Material Handling To increase the facility’s usable capacity by utilizing as much of a building’s height and aisle space. To reduce the number of times a company handles goods. Avoid extra movement and automate as much as possible.
