I. Doctrine A. Doctrines were human experiences first B. They found something happening to their lives which had never happened Before. C. Sometimes, however, simply to subscribe to a doctrine is the first step toward experiencing the reality that lies behind it II. Heretics A. Heretics are people who hold opinions at variance with established religious beliefs. B. Now what’s in danger are established religious beliefs C. It’s not that the opinions are at variance with orthodoxy but that they have few if any opinions on such matters at all, because they consider them irrelevant. D. Modern-day heretics are less opposed to religion than they are simply left cold by it. III. Reason (revelation) A. Two ways of describing how you came to know something: 1. You found it out 2. It occurred to you 3. REASON IS INVOLVED IN BOTH B. It occurred to you suggests knowledge given as distinct from knowledge earned C. Revelation means knowledge as grace. Nobody has ever managed to find out much if anything about God.
