Richard Vasquez Section 2 January 10, 2013 Bertrand Russell’s essay, “Philosophy for Laymen,” is a wonderful work that points out a number of philosophy’s attributes including: its history, its meaning (“love for wisdom”), its two related aims (theoretical understanding and practice), and its relation to both science and religion. In doing so, the essay argues philosophy’s purpose and how it should function in the everyday. The purpose of this study is to keep alive those theoretical questions which science cannot yet answer; however, this does not suggest mere skepticism. Rather, philosophy advocates certainty of either knowledge or lack thereof. Equally, philosophy is intended to be a practice, advocating a way of life and issuing intellectual virtues such as: “knowledge is good, even if what is known is painful.” The essay finally notes that if people can couple this understanding of philosophy with its practice, they can achieve serenity.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
