Richard Vasquez Section 2 April 5, 2013 Jean-Paul Sartre’s lecture, Existentialism is a Humanism , discusses many things on the topic of existentialism, including: religion, freedom, responsibility, and much more. Sartre states his purpose in the first sentence of the lecture: “My purpose here is to offer a defence of existentialism against several reproaches that have been laid against it.” With this aim, Sartre depicts existentialism as a responsibility that is attributed entirely to humankind. We have no essence (or meaning). Therefore, upon removing perspectives beyond this, we find that humans have choices and actions. These capabilities essentially define everything, as they place full responsibility on the choices we make and the actions we commit. Realizing this, we should not, however, retreat into “quietism.” Rather, he notes that our lives our defined entirely by our own actions. Accordingly, we should not “discourage man from acting” because his actions shape his future.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
