Response rate: this is a huge deal. how many surveys you can send out to get people to respond (so out of 100 surveys sent, how many respond). The lowest response rate is mail and Internet. Perceived anonymity: people will give better answers if there is no interviewer, if they feel they are anonymous they will give more honest answers. Social desirability: people will conform to what they should say in the presence of others (people saying they recycle everything with an interviewer, versus saying they kinda recycle with an anonymous one). Interviewer bias: how the interviewer might change the questions through their bias or their personal intentions. Speed: how fast you can get the information after you send the survey (mail is probably the slowest, electronic is probably fastest). Cost: to collect, to write, to pay interviewer, to provide incentives..etc. If a method has a low response rate, you will probably have to give more incentives (the cheapest is internet). How to increase response rate: if you tell them the interview is coming (aka house interview), following up (a reminder like eSpots to fill out the survey), incentives (monetary, extra credit, free drink, even as little as a quarter will be an incentive people to fill it out.
