Unformatted text preview: Slide 1 PSY 101: General Psychology The Neuron Slide 2 Note: page on what makes someone left or right handed posted on OAK Slide 3 Mary has a restaurant and she wants to know what music her clients like best; that is, what music makes them buy the most wine. She randomly selects one CD from her Italian opera collection, and randomly selects one Jazz CD. She plays the opera CD on Mondays and the Jazz CD on Tuesdays for a month, and she randomly samples 20% of the checks from the Monday and Tuesday tables. She Fnds that the group who listened to Opera ordered 15% more wine than the other group. Is this an experimental design and why? Slide 4 Yes, she had complete control over the experiences of two, supposedly identical groups and manipulated one variable (music) in order to see how the other variable (wine) varied with it. This is an experimental design because by choosing days to play her choice of music, she manipulates the independent variable (the customers). And the result demonstrates that choice of music actually has an effect on customer's will of purchase. Yes because she is manipulating the enviornment in which her customers order the wine. However, she should've used the same customers rather than two different sets of customers on two different nights. Slide 5 No this not an experiment because she is not controlling anything. She plays two different types of music for two separate groups. She also only samples 20% of the checks. I believe this is not an experimental design because she does not know if she would have received the same results a month ago when she was not using music. No this is not an experimental design because there is no constant variable. She has nothing to compare her samples to. This is just an observation. Slide 6 An experiment: a study in which the investigator manipulates at least one variable while measuring at least one other variable....
