Swab pressures are pressures created by pulling
the drill string form the borehole. The swab
pressure is a negative pressure and reduces the
effective hydrostatic pressure through the hole.
The variables controlling swab pressure are
(1) pipe pulling speed,
(2) mud properties,
(3) hole configuration,
(4) the effect of “balled” equipment.

The mud cutting is usually that which is
obtained form the core volume cut by the
bit and released into the mud system, it
may expand and reduce the overall
hydrostatic pressure to a point sufficient to
allow a kick to occur.

Kicks are occasionally caused by lost
circulation as a result of a decreased
hydrostatic pressure due to a shorter
column of mud. It is a recommended
practice to attempt to keep the hole
