Unformatted text preview: n of mud. 60 Copyright(c) 2005 by Ali Ghalambor & Boyun Guo 30 D. Swabbing Swab pressures are pressures created by pulling the drill string form the borehole. The swab pressure is a negative pressure and reduces the effective hydrostatic pressure through the hole. The variables controlling swab pressure are (1) pipe pulling speed, (2) mud properties, (3) hole configuration, (4) the effect of “balled” equipment. 61 E. Cut Mud The mud cutting is usually that which is obtained form the core volume cut by the bit and released into the mud system, it may expand and reduce the overall hydrostatic pressure to a point sufficient to allow a kick to occur. 62 Copyright(c) 2005 by Ali Ghalambor & Boyun Guo 31 F. Lost circulation Kicks are occasionally caused by lost circulation as a result of a decreased hydrostatic pressure due to a shorter column of mud. It is a recommended practice to attempt to keep the hole filled with water in order to monitor the fluid level. 63 4. Warning Signs of Kicks A. Introduction: There are a number of warning signs and possible warning signs of kicks that can be observed...
