Unformatted text preview: os.kurt@epa.gov Description: This program is jointly sponsored by EPA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program encourages the profitable use of methane recovery (biogas) technologies at confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) that manage manure as liquids or slurries. These technologies reduce methane emissions while achieving other environmental benefits. Business case: Utilizing anaerobic digester (AD) technology can reduce odors and provide improved manure management. Use of AD systems allows for the capture of biogas and the possible use of methane as an energy source for on and off-farm energy needs. AD biogas has been used for a variety of purposes including generating heat, hot water, and electricity. Other opportunities for using methane include absorption cooling systems, producing high-Btu gas for injection into the natural gas pipeline, and development of alternate liquid and gaseous vehicle fuels. Markets are also growing for the use of the animal processed fibers (manure solids), primarily in the ho...
