Ways Play Therapy might be Beneficial According to Taylor (2009), sand tray therapy is a primary nonverbal method of intervention. Sandboxes are familiar to most children, sand play is not likely to be threatening and more likely to be safe way to express what may seem to be unacceptable feelings and impulses (Taylor, 2009). The sand itself is so relaxing that deep and painful issues are less frightening to discuss in the therapy session (Taylor, 2009). Play therapy using the sand tray was able to help Claudia verbalize her feelings and share relevant stories (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014).
