Notes for Monday 3 March 2008 Finishing up what we discussed on Wednesday 27 March 2008 -Socio-economic status (SES) is more complex than money. It needs to take into account power, networking, societal status and privilege. -“code-switching” relates to cultural identity and plays into the performance of scripts. Definition agency: refers to a human being’s ability to act; to “do culture”; to make choices; to live actively and navigate one’s life. Definition structure: aspect of society that shapes us. Examples: social institutions, socialization, rules/norms/values… Definition agency within constraint: living within the rules of society Agency within constraint is the story of our lives. We always do this. Gender as a structure imposed on us. unavoidable Definition ascribed: social structure is what we’re born into; inherent Definition achieved: individuals’ actions contribute to class status and culture. Result of agency. Parenting strategies are dependent on class
