Swine Operations - Feeder pig production: o Commercial sow operation (similar to cow/calf) o Maintain brood sows and gilts o Produce and market 40 lb feeder pigs Feeder pigs also called shoats o Feeder pig finisher Buys 40lb feeder pigs Feeds out to market weight (~240lbs) Sells finished market hogs to processor - Boar Management o Boar selection traits Maternal traits of the boar’s dam Litter number Underline (number of teats) Boars own growth traits Feed/gain ratio, backfat thickness, structural soundness o Isolate new boars for 30 days after purchasing o Acclimate 60 days prior to sing for breeding o Herd health: vaccinations, parasite control o Breeding soundness evaluation o Monitor body condition o Boars are POWERFUL and DANGEROUS!!! Know their behavior Use handling aids (panels, sorting sticks, etc.) Know when you’ll need help and get it - Breeding Programs o Pen breeding Simply put boar in the pen with a group of sows to breed
