After centuries of extreme racial degradation and segregation, the African American people began to seek political and social change through demonstrations, protests, marches, and legal battles. The first wave of collective action is known as the Civil Rights movement, which began in the mid twentieth century. It encompassed a variety of efforts to bring attention to the myriad injustices faced by African Americans. The Civil Rights movement’s goal was to inspire change in society and its oppressive institutions. Furthermore, it sought to completely eliminate legal segregation in America and revolutionize the status of African Americans. The Civil Rights movement was successful in many ways. The methods used in demonstrations were non-violent resistance. This fortified the horror being committed against African Americans when protests and other actions were reported in the media.
