Typically, these pollutants are removed from the wastewater using a variety of pretreatment processes, especially physical and chemical processes. Examples include coagulation, flocculation precipitation, sedimentation, filtration, ion exchange, air stripping, membrane separation activated carbon adsorption, wet oxidation and photochemical oxidation.
