Will Rigby Geology 100 Dr. Kinzly Moore Megaquakes: Mega Problems As a resident of Southern California for all of my life (before Vanderbilt of course), I have had my fair share of natural events, in particular earthquakes. There's been over 20 earthquakes in California since I've been born all of which were rated at over 5.0 on the Richter scale (with the highest being a 7.3), so needless to say earthquakes don't quite shake me up as much as most of my peers at Vanderbilt. Between Alaska and California, ranked #1 and #2 respectively for most earthquakes in the United States they comprise in excess of 80% of all the earthquakes nationally. Since California (and the west coast in general due to the Pacific's "Ring of Fire") is so regularly effected by earthquakes there has been a lot of research into predicting not only when and where earthquakes might occur, but also estimating damages. San Diego State University, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Southern California Earthquake Center simulated a virtual quake that would have a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale with the epicenter along the Juan de Fuca fault line.
