Biological therapies: medications Psychotherapeutic drugs: Antipsychotic drugs: major tranquillizers, block dopamine recepters, as a result they decrease psychotic behaviors. Examples are thorazine, haldol, clozaril (these are psychotherapeutic drugs) *deals with hallucinations -side affects: blurred vision, dryness of the mouth, poor concentration -often in shot form and usually for bipolar disorder patients -only going to be given if the patients out of control Tardive dyskinesia: a permanent side effect, damage to the brain, cause the person to have involuntary movements of the tongue, face, mouth, and jaw Atypical antipsychotics: new forms of antipsychotic drugs, clozapine and risperidone are two of them -side affects- do not get tardive dyskinesia drastic weight gain, they are constantly hungry Antidepressant drugs: Monoamine oxidase inhibitors: block the activity of an enzyme that can destroy norepinpherine Tricyclic antidepressants: must be put on a strict diet; prevent reuptake of serotonin and norepinepherine. Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors: increase serotonin levels, block reuptake; Prozac, zoloff, paxal are three common drugs. Used for depression and OSD and panic disorders. Lithium- sometimes used for depression, mainly used for bipolar and severe depressed clients, reduces extreme mood swings, only 30-50% of people respond, has severe side effects, you can easily overdose on it. Antiaxiety Drugs: Benzodiazepines: include tranquillizers like *valium, *Librium, xanax, and ativan, calms you down in a few minutes, quickly runs out of system, incredibly addictive Stimulants: treat ADD or ADHD (Ritalin), about 60-90% respond well to drugs -stimulants will not make a complete difference; the child has to learn some
