CHAPTER 6 – The T-Test The  t-test  is used to determine if two groups differ significantly from one another The  t-test  is used when there is 1 Independent Variable with 2 levels The t-test tests differences between two group means except the population standard deviation is not  known and thus the standard error of the difference is used Because an estimation of the standard error of the difference is used, the resulting sampling  distribution is not normally distributed o The smaller the sample sizes the flatter the t-distribution Degrees of freedom  refers to how many scores are free to vary in a group of scores in order to obtain  the observed mean o Degrees of freedom are used in order to find the appropriate values on the t-table o When degrees of freedom are infinite, which is around sample sizes of several hundred or  more, the critical values are the same as for z-distributions
