Regardless of the purpose of the advance organizer, research on advance
organizers has identified the following guidelines for their use.
• Advance organizers tend to be more useful to students if they contain
concrete or familiar examples or models of the principles being
described in the advance organizer (Corkill, 1992; Mayer, 1979). • Advance organizers are more useful if students actively process the
content of the advance organizer. For example, Corkill, Bruning &
Glover (1988) had students paraphrase the content of the advance
organizers. You could also have students revisit the advance organizer
at the end of the lesson in an effort to connect the new learning to the
advance organizer. • Advance organizers are more useful if your goal is for students to
understand how ideas are related, than if your goal is for students to
