enrichment activities or allowed to progress to the next unit. It should be emphasized that teachers may use a variety of teaching
approaches with a mastery learning format. For example mastery learning can
easily be combined with cooperative learning approaches (Laney, 1999).
However, mastery learning is well suited to a behavioral approach to classroom
teaching because it focuses on the teaching of specific objectives in a sequential
manner, and students are encouraged to learn initial skills correctly before they
progress to later skills.
Effectiveness of Mastery Learning
Classroom research on mastery learning has generally supported mastery
learning as an effective instructional strategy (Block & Burns, 1976; Kulik, Kulik
