Here is how John Gregorio uses Venn diagrams in his teaching. I use Venn Diagrams to help students compare and contrast key ideas. The similarities between the two ideas are written in the part where the circles overlap. The differences between the two ideas are written in the non-overlapping parts of each circle. One commonly used spatial/semantic organizer is the concept or knowledge map. Concept or knowledge maps consist of nodes and labeled links 30 that reflect the interrelationships of ideas. Ideas or concepts are placed at the nodes and labeled lines or links are drawn between concepts to reflect how they are related or interconnected. Figure 7.2 (appears at the end of the chapter) provides an example of a concept map. Concept and knowledge maps have been used across academic domains and grade levels and for various purposes. For example concept maps have been used as a device to help students plan their writing, to help them build vocabulary knowledge, and to improve reading comprehension (Sturm & Rankin-Erickson, 2002).
