they belong. Dreikurs suggests that when children and adolescents find they
cannot belong or feel important through socially acceptable means, they
misbehave. However, their misbehavior is not random; it is goal-directed. The
goal, whether students are aware of it or not, is to find a way to feel important. 52 The nature of students’ misbehavior informs teachers of the type of importance
students are seeking.
Dreikurs identifies four goals for misbehavior. They are summarized for
you in Table 10.3 (appears at the end of the chapter). For some students, the goal
is attention. The faulty belief is that they can only be important if people pay
attention to them. Seeking attention is positive, but these students demand it. A
power goal is based on students’ faulty belief that they can only feel good about
themselves if they are in charge or keeping adults from being in charge. Students
with a power goal want to engage adults in a power struggle for control.
