To be able to understand the Asian American experience and history and how this relates to your own history whether you are Asian or nonAsian, native born ,or foreign born or in AAS parlance in the 1960's ABC's or FOB's. among the youth, legal or illegal migrant y 2. To convey the Asian American experience through the voices and viewpoints of Asian Actors themselves. Too often, the experience of nonwhites have been passive as victims, This course seeks to empower these groups as historical agents- from faceless, nameless, voiceless, to those with faces with names and stories to tell. a. Asiacentricity--in a way yes to counter the extreme Eurocentric bias on American history b. complaints on White Bashing--overexagerrated and overly defensive. 3. To make the connection with the early history of Asian Americans and the modern period of immigration to those in the classroom--how did the strikers in the 1960's make the connection to the early history in the articulation of their needs in the formation of ethnic studies 4. To understand the present communities the myriad of issues Asian americans face from problems of gangs, poverty, health issues like lack of access to health care, anti Asian violence, bias in Undergraduate Admissions, glass ceilings in the labor market, and something we should also celebrate about-- cultural Renaissance in the arts, flourishing of Asians in lit, film, comedy, music, art, etc. .., political emporwerment, high educational backgrounds, m E. PROCEDURES IN WHICH WE WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THESE OBJECTIVES. 1. Lectures. 2. Films shown in class/ readings 3. community events like plays and performing arts 4. Research paper in which you will deal with some issues in great detail and focus 5. Peripheral education-- a. The use of Asian American studies library b. The use of media services in Dwinnelle and Moffit M 6. Asian Week, Ethnically based newspapers like Filipino News, Student magazines m F. NEW CONCEPTS TO BE INTRODUCED IN THE CLASS F 1. The whole concept of Asian American and where this label came from and how it has changed from Oriental to Asian American to Asian American and Pacific Islanders to Asian Pacific Islanders. P 2. The concept of the model minority and the myth of this label as it applies to Asian Americans i 3 The concept of race/ethnicity and how the definitions have changed through time through resistance from below and counter resistance from above(institutional) to new articulations 4. The idea of glass ceiling in the labor market and how these are explained by scholars both in the human capital school and the dual labor market school
