I. Vietnam a. Indochina refers to the countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia while South East Asia is the Phillipines, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia b. In order to understand the presence of IndoChinese in America they are here because American was in Vietnam, Laos and Kampochea i. In 1944, Ho Chi Mihn had formed a communist group called the Viet Ming to take back Vietnam for its own people in order to prevent French takeover ii. Even though the US was not supportive of France retaking its colonies since it was the start of decolonization period of many countries, the US needed France to contain the spread of communism iii. With French withdrawal, a pro American and anti-communist Ngo Ding Diem was installed as Prime Minister of South Vietnam iv. In 1964, the Viet Cong hit an American destroyer in the Tonkin which lef to the passafe of the Tonkin resolutions giving the presient broad powers to do what he saw perfect v.
