Participants learn to recognize the direct impact of microfinance and are motivated by the potential for economic gain. Once the women gain independent economic stability, and learn about the drivers and consequences of risky sexual behavior and how to become more sexually empowered, they are incentivized to change their behavior. It has been shown that women reached by the IMAGE program, either directly through a loan or indirectly through programs run by chosen leaders, are more likely to communicate openly about HIV, seek counseling or testing, and less likely to have unprotected sex than those who were not reached.
