What have psychologists (and others) discovered about the process of scientific discovery? Current Directions in Psychological Science, 10, 75-79. Eyesenck pages 328-332 1. What are four approaches used to study the process of scientific discovery? Briefly describe (in your own words) 1-2 strengths and 1-2 weaknesses of each approach. - One approach is historical accounts of scientific discoveries. One weakness of this approach is that it is often subjective meaning too narrow and cannot be generalized. A strong point is that they are very focused and valid. The next approach is psychological experiments with non-scientists working on tasks related to scientific discoveries. The weakness of this is that it may ignore social & motivational factors. The strength of this is that detailed data is collected over a relatively brief amount of time. Third approach is direct observations of ongoing scientific laboratories. A weakness of this is that it is extremely time consuming and difficult. Strengths of this include the fact that it will be more precise, have high face-validity, and are objective. Fourth approach is computational modeling of scientific discovery processes. A weakness of this is that it may not be as accurate and reliable as the original theories.
