The course emphasizes student acquisition of grammar, vocabulary, and conventions of modern spoken Mandarin. By the end of the semester, you will be able to participate in daily Chinese conversations, read and write a wide range of Chinese characters. Communicative and interactive activities are utilized in the course in order to develop students' four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as to broaden students' knowledge of Chinese culture in today's major Mandarin Chinese speaking countries. For this semester, we will continue use Integrated Chinese, Level 1, Part 1 along with the workbook and character workbook for that textbook, but we will also cover one lesson from Level 1, Part 2, and its accompanying texts. You will continue use the IC Part 2 book for CHIN 201. Course Requirement We will start our class on time; you should be prepared to be active, alert, and participatory member of our class. In our daily class routines, we will emphasize conversation, repetition, dictations, and written practice of various kinds in order to increase your ability to speak, read, and write Chinese. Everyone should be prepared to participate each day. You should listen every day to the audio clips for the assigned lesson online (on our Blackboard site), and you should practice characters with flash cards and worksheets equally frequently. The amount of vocabulary and grammar patterns covered in each chapter continues to rise as we approach the end of the book, so you should be prepared to increase your study time as the semester goes along.
