“A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” is about two waiters working at a bar. One is a young waiter who has a new wife and kids and wants very badly to get home to them as soon as he can. The other waiter is an older waiter who is perfectly content with staying at the bar late because when he goes home he can’t sleep until it gets light out. They are talking about an old man who frequently comes into the bar to drink. The young waiter says how the police who have been walking by the bar should come and take the old man from the bar so he can go home to his wife. The old man was deaf and would like to sit at the bar and drink for long period of times. The week before he tried to commit suicide. He was unsuccessful because his niece who takes care of him was able to get him down from the rope he was hanging himself from. The younger waiter does not have much pity for the man because he said that since he has a lot of money he had no reason to try and kill himself. The old

Unformatted text preview: man would come in and drinks brandy. The old man would motion for the waiter to come over and fill his cup up with brandy. The young waiter says how he should have killed himself when he tried to. He tried to rush the old man into finishing because he wants to go home to his wife. The last time that the waiter comes by he does not even oblige the old man by filling up his cup even though he is asking for a refill, he just takes his cup from him so he will leave. The old waiter is in no hurry and does not like the fact that the younger waiter rushes the old man. The older waiter went to another bar after locking up. He sat there and drank because he did not want to go home. He knew that if he went home he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep until it was light out. He says how he has no confidence and is not young at all and how much of a difference those things make....
