ARH312 Notes – March 11, 2008 Carolingian Ebbo Gospels, Reims, France, 816-835 Vivian Bible (first bible of Charles the Bald), Tours, France, c. 845 -gift from the countess Vivian to charles’ grandson, charles the bald -full page illustrations with beautiful artistrty. Political obligation. -combination of old and new testament, jesus is seated in judgment pose on the globe or earth. -page displaying astrological signs. -Carolingians had interest in astrology. Developed a sense of science to create centralized calendar. -full page narratives split up almost in comic form. -Use of shorthand imagery to get the point to the narrative. Very characteristic of Carolingian. Drogo Sacramentary, Metz, Germany, c. 850 -Narratives take place within the decorated first letters of the text. -letter C shows the ascension with gods hand coing down from heaven and pulling jesus back up to heaven. This is an assumption due to the fact that the bible doesn’t state how jesus go to heaven at ascension.
