IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATION Careful research and documentation are needed to help us better understand the problems created for children of color by the violence marketed to them and how we can work to counteract this influence. Until now, this issue has been largely neglected by researchers, educators, policymakers, and the wider society. Yet, they all have a vital role to play. In the meantime, there is much educators can do to assist parents in their job-made more difficult by the violent entertainment culture. Here are some brief examples of the kinds of efforts that are needed: * Reduce the influence of media violence first by limiting children's exposure to media violence and then by helping them process the violence and racism they do see (Comer & Poussaint, 1992; Levin, 1998). * Promote creative play and the use of open-ended play materials that allow young children to bring their imagination, experience, and culture into their play and work through the salient issues in their lives (Carlsson-Paige & Lev...
