CHEMISTRY 120 – CHAPTER 3 – REVIEW Matter: has mass and occupies space. o Pure substance: constant composition and constant physical properties. Elements: contain atoms of only one type. Na Compounds: made of two or more elements in a definite ratio. NaCl o Mixtures: two or more substances not chemically combined. Can be separated by physical means. Physical properties vary depending on concentration ratio. Homogeneous: uniform composition. Different parts of mixture are not visible. Heterogeneous: different parts of mixture are visible. Composition varies within mixture. o Elements: building blocks of matter. Pure substances. Listed in the periodic table. Symbols: 1 or 2 letters representing an element. First letter capitalized. Learn the elements (names and symbols) listed in the first two sections of the nomenclature handout. o Physical properties: observed or measured properties, no bonds broken. Shape, color, odor, taste, melting point, boiling point, density.
