GRAND THEORY2Grand TheoryNursing theory was developed to guide the nurse in planning and treating the client.Nursing theories provide a framework for the nurse to utilize as a guide in creating the plan ofcare. These theories are implications for quality patient care (Meleis, 2012).Grand theories arebroad and abstract; they are useful to the practicing nurse and can be used in a variety of settings.According to Meleis (2012), there are four types of grand theories; concepts of needs,interaction, outcomes, and caring.This paper will discuss each theorist from the four grandtheories to develop a better understanding of the ideas in the theories and how they can beapplied to nursing practice.Dorothea Orem’s theory was created to meet the client’s needs. This theory can beapplied to wide variety of clientele in order to meet their needs. This theory is constructed of caresteps designed to assist the client in recovery and independence. Nursing actions are deliberatelyselected and performed by nurses with a goal of helping clients improve or maintain condition(Meleis, 2012). Orem's theory is assist’s the client in developing a plan focusing on self-care,facilitating in client rehabilitation.Ida Orlando developed the Deliberative Nursing Theory.Orlando’s theory of interactioncan be applied to the client in distress or suffering from consideration of perception validation(Faust, 2002).
