Russell Barton Geog 203 Section 023 Newark Field Project #3 The shop “Grassroots” on the corner of East Main and Academy Street portrays loving care, and an overall feel of home in many ways. Immediately one notices the warm color bricks and colorful seat outside the door. The wrap-around cement stairs and the porch they create resembles that of my own house. From outside, you can see that there is a certain warm lighting on the inside, comforting anyone that ventures through the door. On the outside wall, there is a large cement square divided into smaller painted cement art work, framed by painted glass; All of which are painted with warm colors and contain calm illustrations. In one of the windows, a dark red clock keeps accurate time, appearing like it belongs on the mantle of any household fireplace. Grassroots also displays many handmade items, like pottery and sculptures, giving the owner a feeling of being unique and independent, having a one-

In yet another window, there are many different types of soaps, all appearing to be homemade. My mother is a collector of organic soap, which immediately caused me to connect with this display. In the final window, there are a number of coffee table books based on better living. One book in particular had a quote on the cover that I was able to connect with. Written by Bruce Williamson, it said “Walk in the rain, smell flowers, stop along the way, build sandcastles, go on field trips, find out how things work, tell stories, say the magic words, trust the universe.” So many of those things are integrated into the loving care everyone desires, and I really stopped and took the words to heart. That is what most people want to do, and usually they desire their loved ones to come on the journey with them....
