Chinese Philosophy Day Five Notes “The Daoism of the Dao De Jing and Zhungzi” I. Intro to Daoism A. Zi-4 Ran-2 Spontaneity: This term for self is often equated with nature. B. Egalitarian there is no hierarchical structure to things. C. Wu-2 wei-2 Actionless action: Let nature flow through you without propositional planning. D. Characterized by organic spontaneity. II. School of dao-4 A. Dao-4 path or a way. B. All schools use the dao-4 in some way, often times a way toward something. C. For Daoists, dao-4 is just virtue, not a way to something. 1. For Daoists, dao-4 is the ultimate and final condition. III. The Dao is nameless A. The Dao is eternal and has no name 1. When there are names, Daoists stop. B. The Dao is hidden and nameless. C. Contrary to Greek thinking, the Dao is all around us, not in a spiritual realm of the forms. D. Daoism blatently discourages the idea of a singly diety. IV. The Dao is one A. Yi-1 is synonymous with dao-4.
